So was it all bad?
So, we have looked at the trenches- their conditions and what made them up; the daily routines- what was meant to be done on a daily basis; food and drink- how the soldiers ate to keep their strength up; going over the top- what it meant for soldier; the health conditions, how it affected the men and finally how they passed the time.
I think that it wasn't that bad. Sure there were parts about living in the trenches that were horrific, for example, the rats. That alone is enough to freak a person out, I mean if I was a rat in my house I would full on lose it but then I would call an exterminator however, for soldiers in the trenches, there were no exterminators and the rats were the size of a fully grown cat. They lived with that for 4 years, now that is real perseverance. Also there was the part of the diseases and the health. They were living like pigs in the worst possible sty but they held it out and you have to commend the soldiers for that. There are lots of good parts in the trenches but it mainly forgotten as the bad overrides the good. The soldiers wrote songs and poems, when they had free time, they talked to other soldiers about their life before the war. They shared a fag as if they were mates meeting up in a pub for a pint except that they were in water-logged trenches with gun fire all around them.
In the end, I think it all comes down to opinion. Some people might disagree with me and say that life in the trenches was an atrocity and they probably have a valid reason for thinking that. However, at the end of the day, the soldiers had a job to do and they did it with many, many, many hardships along the way and 15 million deaths but that is why we speak English in the UK and not German.
