Below are a things that affected the condition of the trenches.
weather and hygiene
When it rained the ground would get flooded and the soldiers would have to walk through the water and that would cause Trench foot. The were also rats that were the size of cats. There were also lot of diseases spread from one to the other and this was mainly through the bathroom use. There were no showers and everyone soon began to smell and the lice spread quicker.
Rats and lice
Rats and lice filled the trenches and there was a huge stench. Rats ate from dead soldiers and living soldiers as well. If they were really hungry they would feed on injured or sleeping soldiers. As the bed were on ground level, you had to be aware were you slept because the rats could eat through their boots and clothes.
Diseases
It was more likely for a man to die from diseases then in battle. The water in the trenches was like muddy swimming pools and they were filled with frogs!!! Many soldiers suffered from trench foot and could rot if left untreated. Other predicaments included trench fever, shell shock etc.
